Scripture: John 19:30
Many Christians across the globe participate in memorial traditions during Holy Week that include a pilgrimage of sorts often called The Way of the Cross, or Stations of the Cross. We also engage in an activity called Veneration of the Cross, specifically in the context of our Good Friday liturgy and practice. You can read more about this tradition here.
In this time of isolation and lack of access to our churches, we invite you to search for and take up your cross at home. If you have created a home altar, you might begin there by reading through part or all of a Good Friday liturgy with your family gathered. (One liturgy can be found starting on page 276 of The Book of Common Prayer. If you are not an Episcopalian, you may decide to find and read through a Good Friday liturgy from your own faith tradition.)
Here are some options for various age groups and energy levels:
- Cross Scavenger Hunt – task your young ones with finding as many “crosses” in various rooms of your home, or outdoors if it is safe to do so. Encourage them to look for unusual crosses and to offer a simple prayer at each one.
- Cross Collage – take photos of different crosses, or search for picture of crosses online and create collages to place on your altar.
- Read the Passion narrative as a family, assigning parts for each reader.
- Think and reflect on how Jesus carried the cross given to him and journal or compose poetry as your thoughts wander, recalling that Jesus may have died on the Cross, but he also transformed the Cross to a powerful symbol of new life.
