Scripture: Matthew 22:17-22

Ah, trick questions! The religious leaders seek to back Jesus into a corner in today’s text. If Jesus says that paying taxes is the right thing to do he aligns himself with a Herod’s nationalistic movement. If he says don’t pay the tax then he is rebelling against the powerful Roman state. Jesus’ answer points us toward the reality that God’s kingdom transforms any earthly power. We are no strangers to political rivalry and division today. Jesus calls us to find a way to act amidst the powers of government, corporations, and institutions of this world in ways that daily proclaim Christ as Lord and ultimate authority over our lives.
