Scripture: Matthew 19:20-22
This week, we follow Jesus through the 19th and 20th Chapters of Matthew. Jesus had many conversations with his disciples and those who followed him. He had a lot to say about the distribution of wealth and the distribution of power. Those who listened to him were undoubtedly surprised since Jesus often turned things upside down. This week, you’ll be challenged to consider what Jesus’s lessons may mean for us.
How often might we ask a question and be disappointed by the answer? When a young man told Jesus that he kept all of his commandments, Jesus laid down a challenge for the man to sell all his possessions and follow Jesus. Perhaps it’s because the stuff the man owned was the stuff that got in the way of fully following Jesus. When we depend on things, rather than God, we can get distracted and focus on our own comfort rather than the sacrificial love for others, the kind of love Jesus showed us.
