Scripture: Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus feeds the multitudes is a story of God’s blessing for everyone who hungers, no matter who they are. It is a vision of God’s Dream for all people. The Hebrew scriptures are full of visions of the world made whole, many are found in the Psalms, which can be read as prayers. Start in silence, taking a few slow breaths. If there are several readers in your household, you may choose to each read a half verse, marked with an asterisk. A solo reader may also pause at the half verse. Read slowly and pause at the asterisks and periods. This is a prayer of hope, describing the world as the Psalmist hoped it would one day be. When you come to the end of the psalm, take a few more long, slow breaths. Imagine the world God wants for all of us, where everyone is healed and fed, surrounded by their companions.
Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21 (from the Book of Common Prayer)
The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, *
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is loving to everyone *
and his compassion is over all his works.
The LORD is faithful in all his words *
and merciful in all his deeds.
The LORD upholds all those who fall; *
he lifts up those who are bowed down.
The eyes of all wait upon you, O LORD, *
and you give them their food in due season.
You open wide your hand *
and satisfy the needs of every living creature.
The LORD is righteous in all his ways *
and loving in all his works.
The LORD is near to those who call upon him, *
to all who call upon him faithfully.
He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; *
he hears their cry and helps them.
The LORD preserves all those who love him, *
but he destroys all the wicked.
