Scripture: Mathew 14:13-21
Read this 2014 article by Rachel Held Evans, “From the Lectionary: 5,000 Companions.” The author tells us that this has long been her favorite story, and that as a little girl, she imagined herself right in the middle of it.
After reading the article, discuss these questions:
- Can you imagine yourself in this scripture story? What are you doing? How are you feeling, about yourself and about Jesus?
- The word “companion” comes from 2 words meaning “with” and “bread.” With whom do you share bread? Is it always the same people? When was the last time you ate with a stranger or a new friend? Are you looking forward to sharing your bread with friends and strangers?
- What is the lesson the author thinks we should learn, that Jesus fed everyone, without any rules as to who might have some bread and fish?
