Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:33
Read the Baptismal Covenant from the Book of Common Prayer. (If you are not Episcopalian, you may wish to also read through your own denomination's baptismal promises.)
Being Christian has never been easy, but Sundays definitely made it easier. Until recently, you could wake up and then, using a variety of transportation options, attend church on Sunday morning in a building and with the community of people inside. You could grab a bulletin. Sing the hymns and follow along with the readings. Exchange a handshake or hug at the Peace. Take part in communion, Sunday School, and coffee hour, and then head home. Usually, this being a short and smooth journey taken weekly or at least with some consistency.
Now, many of us are in our homes without the privilege of such travel and opportunities to share in community. This makes the question from the Baptismal Covenant more pressing and more challenging. "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?" How will we be taught to follow Jesus when it is difficult for two or three friends to gather in his name? How will we break bread by ourselves? How will we be diligent in prayer? All these things and more can only be done as the Baptismal Covenant's response boldly proclaims, "...with God's help."
Take time to read and reflect on the Baptismal Covenant. If you are in a family or a community that is gathering during this time, read it aloud, responding to each other. If you are able, commit to watching a live stream or recorded worship service weekly. Consider participating in the daily offices found in the Book of Common Prayer. Perhaps, you can just spend time virtually or in-person with people and share your concerns, thoughts, and feelings, and then pray together.
