Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23
Ruby Bridges was one of the first African American children to integrate into an all-White school, where she endured months of threats, protests, and confinement, but her faith helped her to persevere. She was six-years-old.
Watch these two videos about Ruby Bridges. The first, "The Story of Ruby Bridges" by Robert Coles, teaches us about Ruby Bridges. In the second, "A Courageous Faith," Ruby Bridges reflects on what her experience was like.
After watching the videos, discuss these questions:
- If you could choose one of Ruby’s character traits for yourself, what would you choose and why?
- If you were Ruby, would you have continued to go to school or would you have stayed home where you were safe?
- If there was a child who was different from everyone else and wasn’t allowed in our school because of that difference, would you do anything to help that child? Why or why not?
- Where does Ruby see hope? Where do you see hope?
- What gifts of the Spirit did Ruby Bridges possess that gave her strength to go to an all-White school? What gifts of the Spirit do you think you possess?
